We spend a lot of time on
facebook because we want to satisfy our entertainment needs, share
interpersonal communication & self-expression as well as seeking different
type of information as user basis.
Americans spend more than eight hours a month on
facebook. Especially thanks to Daniel Hunt, David
Atkin & Archana Krishnan, who research on this topic? From their research we
know better than ever why we spend huge time & can't quit the habit.
This study suggest that we use the social media
site to pass our time when we feel loneliness, also want to satisfy our "entertainment" needs as well as to attract us by providing an "interpersonal
communication" and "self-expression," with each others,
according to the report
The study, published in the Journal of
Broadcasting & Electronic Media, suggests that this personality type
determines how an individual uses their social media, how they interact, and
sharing feelings with other. This is the reason for engaging their time on
Facebook, which can fluctuate over time.
They
conducted an online survey by 417 undergraduate students Researchers
have found that five broad categories drive user to online activity:
interpersonal communication, information seeking, passing time, self-expression,
and entertainment. The study led by Hunt, the goal was to see whether the same reasons
drove people to spend time on Facebook. The study confirmed that, users want to
except the information seeking sources, all other behavioral factors that drive
time spend duration as well as online activity on Facebook, with entertainment
opportunities and time passing facilities: this two reasons are the biggest
drivers of Facebook activity.
The three Researchers Daniel Hunt, Archana
Krishnan & David Atkin found that the entertainment motive was shown to be
the most powerful indicator of how much time users use their time on Facebook. During
the study, Facebook was most often used when subjects were feeling loneliness
& bored, opposed to creating relationships with others.
This research was based on the uses &
graftication theory, which state that the participants (or Facebook user) are
not passive of using social media for their specific needs. In other words, if
we got bored, we use the social media to be getting entertained and if we are
looking for information, we interact with the social media to find what we
needed on specific period of time.
Do you like to grow a relationship with others
or being connected with others? The answer would be, “Yes”. Do you like to fill
your minds with entertaining something funny? The answer would be, “Yes”.
Anyone likes to pass their time with something special or meaningful. Nobody is
not to pass their time with pointless facts?
A well defined communications theory stated by
Neil Postman, who suggests that an increase in technology has caused us to use
different types of multimedia & also make curious in behavior. He also said
that most of our daily news is passive or not seems live,
which don’t have something to talk as well as not have any meaningful action," This study conducted
in 1985, before the rise of Facebook,
Twitter, or even the Smartphone.
Hunt’s tried to find out how digital behaviors
affects in society & also make this research more qualitative. But the fact
is that he becomes wonder after getting the research result. Will Social media
make a “Brave New World” society? The answer is “Yes”.
According to the research the other users say they aren't just bored when they using
Facebook; they are bored with Facebook itself.
What is your opinion about Facebook habits and
the constant need to get entertained? Do you think there has been an increase
in your desire for amusement and information as well as huge time consumption
-- and should we blame on Facebook usage?
